Sports Vision and Concussion

  • Baseline Concussion Testing
  • Concussion evaluation and therapy.

The majority of patients that suffer from post concussion syndrome experience visual symptoms. Evaluation and appropriate therapy plays an important role in the recovery process.

Baseline Concussion Testing
The diagnosis and the reliable determination of return to play or work are areas of on-going research in the concussion field. Current testing ranges from questionnaires and cognitive assessment, measurements of balance and coordination and visual evaluation. The repeatability of vision testing and the existence of strong normative data have raised the awareness of visual evaluation as an important component of baseline and recovery measurement in the science of concussion. It is recommended that all athletes have a visual baseline assessment performed annually to allow for management of any occurrence of head trauma.
Concussion and Vision
Review of medical literature leaves no doubt that many patients who suffer from post concussion syndrome have accompanying visual dysfunction. The estimates of the frequency of visual disorders range from 40% – to as high as 80%. The symptoms may resolve in a short time, however in many cases they are persistent and can last for many months. Reported symptoms associated with head trauma may include eye pain, difficulty focusing, headache when performing visual tasks, light sensitivity and double vision. Disorders of the binocular system are the most common finding in this group of patients. In most cases they are responsive to vision therapy aimed at recovery of normal function. Provision of appropriate eyewear can often provide immediate relief from close work difficulties and light sensitivity. At our clinic we work with a peer group of physiotherapists, chiropractors, and medical colleagues to help patients achieve full physical and visual recovery from concussion type injuries.

Ortho K

What is Ortho K?

OrthoK ( short for orthokeratology ) is a non surgical procedure designed to eliminate the need to wear corrective lenses during the day.

How does Orthok work?

A custom designed contact lens is worn overnight that gently reshapes the corneal curvature resulting in clear vision throughout the day without the need for glasses or contacts.

Will it work for all prescriptions?

Unfortunately no. Results are best in near-sighted patients up to -5.00 D with low degrees of astigmatism. It is unpredictable for farsighted patients.

Are there age restrictions?

No. It works well in children and adults.

Is it safe?

Yes. Health Canada and the FDA have approved OrthoK. All contact lens wear, particularly overnight wear, carries a risk of infection. Careful adherence to disinfection and care procedures along with regular check ups reduces the risk of all contact lens related complications
